Let's Play Two!

(c) 2010 F. Bruce Abel

Enjoyed the double-header where first Connie Pillich, then Steve Driehaus, drowned their opponents with accomplishments and relevant facts in faux debate, and artfully dodged the misty raindrops in return.  Both of "our guys" were fullsome with pungency and zingers. If raw ability were the determinant they both would win big November 2nd.  Connie and Steve, I mean.

Both had prepared, and had been prepared, finely. Steve was jaw-droppingly Kennedyesque, showing, in my opinion, world-class improvement from his prior then-best excellent level of presentation (at the Iron Horse, for example). He, at 44, outed an aged-looking -- HD hurt Chabot -- opponent, who was only 57.

Connie at Princeton High School Matthews Auditorium at 7 pm, and Steve on Channel 9 at 8 pm.  I TIVO'd the latter and the former will be available on local cable ICRC.

Connie smoothly demonstrated she was the most effective representative one could be and her opponent pompously said he stood on his "status" of being an IP know-nothing -- proudly not being a politician and proudly not being a lawyer: then demonstrated that he was an up and coming pain in the butt a la Boehner.  He flippantly and ham-handedly referred to the 3 C's Rail Plan as "The Crazy Train."

With the false advantage of being free to attack anything or anyone who had actually done anything in the past for Ohio voters and communities, Republican or Democrat, Connie's opponent promised to go to Columbus and lay waste everything of merit east of the Olentangy,  and to report the promised chaos (e.g. no more state income tax) back via the internet.

Mike Wilson’s statement, repeated at Matthews:
http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2010/08/cincinnati-tea-party-founder-mike.html

“We see the proof of this [Ohio's inhospitality to corporations] in the news when venerable Ohio companies like NCR (founded in Dayton in 1884)… leave for other states and take their jobs with them. We didn’t lose these jobs to overseas competition. We lost them to Georgia and Kentucky. …”

He said "Governor Strickland offered NCR tax breaks totaling $31.1 million in an effort to keep them in Ohio. While that unfortunately wasn’t enough, what it shows is a recognition that the tax climate in Ohio matters and it is so out of whack that a $30 million incentive is insufficient to keep a company here.”

Of course being such a know-nothing, he was unaware that it was 2007 (pre-Pillich) when the Executive Offices were moved to New York City and he was unaware that the vast middle-class blue-collar jobs at NCR were gone decades ago (pre Strickland); thus he did not know how many – relatively small number-- jobs were lost when NCR finally pulled out its Dayton headquarters recently (1,300 white collar, according to the Dayton Daily News; cf. with 18,000 plus jobs at full tilt, per same story)

http://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/stories/2009/06/01/daily15.html

"Do you thus advocate throwing untolled taxpayers’ money at corporations whose laborers have already left, in order to outbid other states for their mere 'headquarters?'” the audience thought.

Both debates were noteworthy as evidence that the Limbaugh use of the term "liberal" as a perjorative word, was dead.  It was not mentioned in the 7 pm debate.  To his credit Wilson eschewed the Limbaugh trope and it was used by Chabot only once, 18 minutes in.

Republicans Challenge Democrats Once Seen as ‘Safe’ - NYTimes.com

What happened to the close race?

Republicans Challenge Democrats Once Seen as ‘Safe’ - NYTimes.com: "Representatives Steve Driehaus of Ohio, Suzanne M. Kosmas of Florida and Kathy Dahlkemper of Pennsylvania were among the Democrats who learned that they would no longer receive the same infusion of television advertising that party leaders had promised. Party strategists conceded that these races and several others were slipping out of reach."

Obama Aides Weigh Bid to Tie the G.O.P. to the Tea Party - NYTimes.com

Obama Aides Weigh Bid to Tie the G.O.P. to the Tea Party - NYTimes.com: "WASHINGTON — President Obama’s political advisers, looking for ways to help Democrats and alter the course of the midterm elections in the final weeks, are considering a range of ideas, including national advertisements, to cast the Republican Party as all but taken over by Tea Party extremists, people involved in the discussion said."

(c) 2010 F. Bruce Abel

Remember how -- still -- the name-calling of our side as "Liberal" was scrotum-withering? Well, let's do the same. Call the opponent a name: "Republican" and leave it at that.

After the Bush years and last two years in Congress, winning an election for any Democrat against the talk-show Republicans -- and all Republicans perforce, must bow to, the talk-show Republicans -- should be as easy as winning a Christian-Democrat -- National Socialist election just after the devastation of WWII.

On the podium (Driehaus, say, or Strickland, or Pillich, with a raised eyebrow and a touch of sarcasm):

"Hey," "This guy, my opponent, is a Republican."

"Case closed."

This was the approach of William F. Buckley Jr. Toward the end of his life he admitted that the key to his successful arguments was not the content he put out, but the one-phrase repost, the raised eyebrow. Let the voters imagine the horrors of the eight years leading up to 2008, when Obama was voted in. Treat the voters like adults. They have lived through those eight years. They know.

P.S. My daughter, upon reading this, points out that "they don't know." If that is true, turn to the Memory Hole argument. Or I have another analogy: the U.S. economy now has pneumonia because the Republicans had it standing coatless in the winter cold for eight years, and even longer in reality, due to intimidating the Clintons, and the Reagan years. Do we dare stand out in another winter coatless?

What Impresses!

Today I found in my mailbox a hand addressed envelope from Driehaus For Congress. Inside the envelope was a hand written note that said the following:

"Richard,

Thanks so much for hosting the event in Glendale last night. What a great turnout!

Thanks for the continued support!

Steve"

How nice and personal. This speaks volumes about the Quality and Character of Congressman Steve Driehaus!

Richard Schwab's Introduction of Congressman Steve Driehaus at the Iron Horse

I have been asked by a few individuals to share my introduction of Congressman Steve Driehaus at the 9/7 Iron Horse event. So here it is:

"I wish more Political Leaders were like U.S. Representative Steve Driehaus. You won't find him out there demonizing, fear mongering, obstructing, spreading misinformation and half truths. He is TOO BUSY - SITTING AT THE TABLE - working on solutions to the challenges facing Cincinnati, our First District, and our great Nation.

I am humbled, and I am honored. I am pleased, and I am proud to introduce to you tonight our COURAGEOUS and COMMITTED Congressman Steve Driehaus!"

Op-Ed Contributor - It’s Still the Year of the Outsider - NYTimes.com

Op-Ed Contributor - It’s Still the Year of the Outsider - NYTimes.com: "Indeed, it will be extremely difficult for Democrats to use their “failed policies of the George W. Bush administration” strategy against Republican Senate candidates who were nowhere near Washington during the Bush years. These include Mr. Buck, Sharron Angle in Nevada, Carly Fiorina in California, Linda E. McMahon in Connecticut and Rand Paul in Kentucky."

Note that this argument doesn't hurt, and helps, Steve Driehaus!

I don't buy the argument anyway.  Anybody who runs as a Republican perforce is beholden to the party deregulators, Right-talk radioers, or could be.  We cannot risk our society again.

Do Not Let Them Forget

Do not forget my opponent sat in office supporting the worst policies in our nation’s history. Do not send him back. His party threw George W. Bush under the bus and now want to start over again. No.  His party has the lowest opinion of the voters. Only 24 percent have 'very' or 'somewhat positive' views of the GOP, which is less than the Tea Party (30 percent) and the Democratic Party (33 percent).

Friday, August 13, 2010 Newsweek Home

Newsweek Home: "Perception of President Obama's handling of the Gulf of Mexico spill has flipped from a net negative to a net positive (42 percent in June to 50 percent now.)

Which party is void of ideas? Forty-three percent say the GOP. Thirty-nine say the Dems."

Subject: 5,500 teachers in Ohio

Friend --

I want to thank the OFA supporters who stood with House Democrats as they raced back to Washington this week to cast a vote on a state assistance bill. I'm proud to say they passed the bill yesterday and the President immediately signed it into law.

And, because of it, hundreds of thousands of jobs will be saved -- including an estimated 5,500 public school teachers across Ohio.

Republicans called this bill a "bailout" and a "handout." They called the police officers, firefighters, and teachers whose jobs were on the line "special interests." And nearly every House Republican voted no.

But Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats did the right thing, reminding us again of what we're fighting for in the upcoming elections. When voters cast their ballots in November, it's up to us to make sure they remember who's fighting for them.

Thanks for all you do,

Mitch

Driehaus's Opponent -- Served and Drank the Cool-Aid When He Was in So Long

From New York Times, Saturday, July 3, 2010, front page:

“Steve Chabot has probably given out a million cups since 1994”…and he’s been serving and drinking the cool-aid of economic and Wall Street deregulation that led our economy over the edge, ever since.  Do we want the cool-aid of Steve Chabot and deregulation again to lead us off the cliff again????

“We’re a little bit early now,” he said, “but if we don’t see a lot of volunteers by August, that’s a problem.”"

The first task: re-creating their get-out-the-vote teams, block by block."
