Subject: Update on October 4th Senate Bill 5 Issue Forum

Dear Mr. Greenberg and Mr. Pepper:

I hope this email finds you both well. I wanted to take a moment to provide an update on the planning for the October 4th Issue Forum on Senate Bill 5 that is being organized by the Junior League of Cincinnati, League of Women Voters and Cincinnati Museum Center. We are very excited about this event and we thank you both for your willingness to participate.

We are still in the planning stages, but I can update you on some of the logistics we have been able to nail down thus far:

Location: Cincinnati Museum Center Auditorium (capacity 285)

Timing: 7:15-8:30 p.m.

Moderator: Maryanne Zeleznik (WVXU)

Speakers: Support of Senate Bill 5 – Gary Greenberg, partner with Denlinger, Rosenthal & Greenberg, LPA, which focuses on labor and employment law

Repeal of Senate Bill 5 – David Pepper, former Cincinnati City Council member and Chair, Protect Ohio’s Future PAC

We are planning a meeting with Maryanne Zeleznik in the next week to finalize the format for the discussion. What I am sharing below is a tentative format, subject to change after conversations with our moderator:

Tentative Format (as of 8/29):

i. 7:20-7:23 – Welcome by Melanie Chavez, President, JLC (set the framework for the event and partnership with CMC and LWV; Melanie to introduce Doug McDonald, President, CMC

ii. 7:23-7:26 – Welcome by Doug McDonald, including introduction of Moderator

iii. 7:26-7:32 – Chronology of SB5 and Introduction of speakers (Zeleznik)

iv. 7:32-8:28 – Issue Forum, Moderated by Maryanne Zeleznik (WVXU)

• 10 questions, 2 minutes each (40 minutes)

• Moderator to ask follow-up questions and give rebuttal if necessary as she deems appropriate (10 minutes)

• 3 minutes for each speaker to close (6 minutes)

v. 8:28-8:30 – Closing by Sarah Moore, JLC Public Affairs Chair and Vicki Calonge, JLC Projects Council VP

I’ll be back in touch following our meeting with Maryanne with more details related to format, but if you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me. Also, if you could forward me your bios or how you’d like to be introduced as part of this Forum I would greatly appreciate it.

Finally, we are working on several media partners and since we expect to have a capacity crowd for this event, given the partners involved, we hope to be able to televise or broadcast the forum to the general public via television or radio or both. If you have any concerns about that, please let me know.

Thank you again for your participation in this event. I look forward to meeting you both.

Jennifer

Pepper pledges to beef up anti-fraud forces | The Columbus Dispatch

Pepper pledges to beef up anti-fraud forces The Columbus Dispatch: "'Too often, the stories we hear about fraud is at a press conference five or six years after the event,' Pepper said in a conference call with reporters. 'That's not a success, it's a failure ... you've lost the money, and it took years to detect.'"

Why Not Just Add Pepper?

Op-Ed Columnist - The Responsibility Deficit - NYTimes.com: "What the country is really looking for is a restoration of responsibility. If some smart leader is going to help us get out of ideological gridlock, that leader will reframe politics around this end."

Add Pepper Dammit!

Last evening Richard Schwab and I attended a beautiful money-raising party in the back yard of the Peppers. And I do mean beautiful.  Not only the setting, under a huge tent, with food and open bar, but, most importantly, three short speeches by, respec-tively, John Pepper, Francie Pepper and the Candidate, David Pep-per, recently Hamilton County Commissioner.

This is the best of Cincinnati; the best of politics.  I came home to Glendale and carefully, reverently, planted my Pepper for State Auditor sign in the dry, hard ground.

John Pepper's introduction was short and very, very powerful.  Francie's was matter-of-fact and appropriately horatory.

David's was polished and businesslike, emphasizing what the Ohio Auditor's job should entail, including bringing business consolidation and order to the 14 failing municipalities around the state.

I have been privileged to see this all develop over the years.  John, the Father, well we know his story; Francie, Woman of the Year in Cincinnati, and introducer of her roommate Eunie to me -- well, we know hers as well.  Now David.

Thus -- if we just add Pepper -- is the world as it should be and I hope to Hell this is the future of Ohio politics.

From last night I conclude this ain't the laid-back "Just Add Pepper."  This is "Add Pepper Dammit! Jalapeno! And quick."  What we will get with David as Auditor of Ohio, just as we got with Hamilton County under his leadership, is William Cooper Procter fairness, humaneness, efficiency and order.
And humor.  It's was David's crack against his father that brought down the house/tent:  "Would those of you with a last name beginning with 'G' please raise your hand?" (John, with two of his secretaries in attendance, in his introductory speech, had "complained" that when he -- dutifully, as David's father -- sent out emails to what he thought was the complete list, David told him to go back and keep working -- that John he had just done the A-to-F's.)

Just Add Pepper

Learn why Ohio Needs to

Just Add Pepper

David will stand up for working families, fight waste, fraud and abuse and be a watchdog for your tax dollar

Dear Friend,

Two weeks ago at the Democratic Party State Dinner, I announced that if we do our jobs this election year, 2010 would mark the beginning of a Blue Decade. I want you to meet one of the people who will be instrumental in bringing us this change – David Pepper.

In fact, I ask you to do one simple thing: sign up for David Pepper’s email list right now. It is the simplest and best way you can get connected to his critical race to secure Ohio’s future.

Having served on Cincinnati City Council and the Hamilton County Commission, David Pepper has the track record we need to keep Ohio moving in the right direction. He has fought hard for Ohio jobs, helped governments be more efficient and do more with less, and stood up time and again for working families.

And he is the type of hard-working candidate we need to win in Ohio. In his first run for political office at 29 years old (in 2001), he finished first out of a field of 26 candidates for Cincinnati City Council.

And in 2006, David won a huge number of cross-over voters in his race for County Commissioner, unseating a Republican incumbent and finishing as the top Democratic vote getter on the county ballot. David’s win marked the first time Democrats have held the county majority in 40 years.

As Auditor, David will be an independent watchdog for your tax dollars, while continuing his track record of helping government become more efficient and creating jobs in our communities.

And as you know, the Auditor is one of the three statewide offices to occupy the critical Apportionment Board. After 2010, that Board will have the responsibility of drawing our legislative districts in Ohio, and can undo two decades of cynical gerrymandering that have stifled democracy and accountability in Ohio elections.

I am honored to be able to give David Pepper my support. Please take a moment, join his mailing list and find out from him directly how you can support this critical campaign.

Best Regards,

Chris Redfern

Chairman

Ohio Democratic Party
